The Republic of Bulgaria (pronounced bul-GAH-ria) is located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by the Black Sea on the east, Turkey and Greece on the south, Macedonia and Serbia on the west and Romania on the north.
Bulgaria has about the same land area as the state of Ohio (45,000 sq. miles) and its population is about nine million people. Some people think that if you counted all the cows and sheep in the country, Bulgaria's population would double!
Sofia is the capital and Bulgaria's largest city (est. pop. 1,116,454). Other large cities include Plovdiv, Varna, Ruse, Veliko Turnovo and Gabrovo. These beautiful cities promote Bulgara's rich culture and serve as important tourist attractions.
